DVD News #37: Creature With The Atom Brain.

Creature With Atom Brain LC

Directed by Edward L. Cahn
Produced by Sam Katzman
Story and Screen Play by Curt Siodmak
Starring Richard Denning, Angela Stevens, S. John Launer, Michael Granger, Gregory Gaye, Linda Bennett

Cahn, Katzman and Siodmak are a B-movie Dream Team and this one’s a lot of cheeseball fun — with Nazi scientists, gangsters and zombies. Mill Creek Entertainment will release a 60th Anniversary edition DVD in a couple weeks. I would imagine this will be the same transfer Columbia used for their Katzman set, which was nice but full-frame.

That Katzman set of several years back was wonderful,
especially with all the extras, serial episodes, trailers,
    and comic shorts.
I really wish this edition was in 1.85 and on Blu-Ray.
This Mill Creek series delving into the Columbia vaults
offers great value, especially the Sci-Fi set on the previous
    post.
I live in hope that Mill Creek can source some UNRELEASED
titles from the Columbia vaults,Heaven knows there’s enough
    of it.
One thing I’d love to see is a Sam Katzman Western Collection.

    • You’re right, that Katzman set was terrific. I’ve always thought The Werewolf was an underrated little gem — a great job by director Fred Sears.

A Katzman Western set — or a William Castle one — would be a dream come true.

        Yep!
THE WEREWOLF is great, certainly one of Sears’
        very best.
I certainly prefer Fred’s fantasy films and horror flicks
to his Westerns. I am in a minority that I love THE GIANT
CLAW…ignore the stuff with “the Puppet” and it’s one cool
        little movie.
Too bad Sam never got Harryhausen to do the effects on
this one..we all know what he could do with giant birds from
the “Roc” in the first Sinbad movie to the “Giant Turkey”
        in MYSTERIOUS ISLAND.
Had Fred not passed away at such a tender age he would have
been a natural for the Sindbad movies and all the other stuff
        that followed.

I would be very interested to hear how sales go
on Olive’s forthcoming releases of Republic Serials
(THE INVISIBLE MONSTER,FLYING DISC MAN FROM MARS.)
Another thing I’d love Mill Creek to unearth are some of
those later Sam Katzman Columbia Serials.
I always found it amazing that Sam (and Columbia) were still
churning out Serials right until the mid-Fifties.
I know a lot of folks knock them but I’ve always had an
affection for those “last gasp” serials.
