Blu-ray News #61: Shield For Murder (1954).

shield-for-murder-movie-poster-1954-1020416538Directed byEdmond O’Brien and Howard W. Koch
Starring Edmond O’Brien, John Agar, Marla English, Emile Meyer, Carolyn Jones, Claude Akins, Hugh Sanders, William Schallert, Richard Deacon, Vito Scotti

Howard W. Koch directed one of my all-time favorite sleazeball crime pictures, Big House, USA (1955). He preceded it with Shield For Murder (1954), starring Edmond O’Brien (who co-directed).

O’Brien’s a detective who kills a bookie for the cash he’s carrying. When he finds out there was a witness, guess it’s time for more killing. O’Brien is joined by a dream cast that includes John Agar, Marla English, Carolyn Jones, Claude Akins, William Schallert, Richard Deacon and Vito Scotti.

Where has this movie been all my life? Lucky for us all, it’s coming to Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. Man, I can’t wait.

  1. That’s it! I could not come up with this title as the movie rattled around my brain last week. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Toby,…I have seen it and it IS terrific. About six years ago on TCM and have been waiting for it to be released legit ever since. Bought the HOLLYWOOD SCRAPHEAP DVD release about a year ago and it’s excellent, sharp with good contrast, probably the same source as TCM…PURE NOIR, good cop goes bad, needs the money to buy a home in the suburbs so he and bride to be can live the perfect Cleaver dream which, of course, goes all wrong as O’Brien tumbles downward rapidly from the swift kick in the butt that fate has dealt him. Dark, cynical look at attaining the American Dream at all costs. No wonder O’Brien morphed into Old Man Sykes 15 years later. It’s movies like SHIELD FOR MURDER that make me love movies, especially noir. I will definitely make this purchase… It’s suppose to rain tonight. I’m happy.

    Really “stoked” about this release,furthermore,
it’s one that I have never seen.
Oddly enough, last night I watched Kino’s Blu Ray
    It’s a stunning transfer.
I thought I would see how Richard Harland Smith’s
commentary was shaping up and was so transfixed I
    sat through the film again.
Richard’s commentary is awesome-it covers so much in
    90 minutes.
We get stuff on Cold War Politics,”survival” movies and
    literature,the Republic Back Lot,Iverson Ranch,anti and pro
    Nuke music,and much more.
There is also some very interesting info on many of the
supporting actors, often very sad and occasionally shocking.
For me Richard’s commentary alone was worth the price of the
DOP Gilbert Warrenton is not a name I know too much about,
but Richard supplies great details-checking on imdb Gilbert
certainly had credits no B Movie junkie could resist.
    Well recommended!

This should have been posted on the previous
thread, and I certainly don’t want to raise false hopes,
but have THE TINGLER listed as a future
release. It’s in the “recently added” section;no further
    details forthcoming at present.
