RIP, John Zacherle, The Cool Ghoul.

John Zacherle
(September 26, 1918 – October 27, 2016)

John Zacherle, the revered horror host Zacherley, has passed away at 98. Starting in Philadelphia in 1957 and continuing in New York through the 60s, Zacherley hosted Shock Theater and other horror-movie shows.

His single “Dinner With Drac” was a Top 10 hit in 1958. And he was featured on the cover of Famous Monsters Of Filmland #15 (up top).

One of my school pals had Dinner With Drac on a London label 45, at the time I thought it was a good rock and roll instrumental with crazy words, nothing more. John Zacherle, the name on the label meant nothing to us in the UK. It wasn’t until the American horror film magazines, especially Famous Monsters, started arriving here in the early 60s that we got to see photos of Zacherley.
I used to have 2 issues of Famous Monsters with Zacherley on the cover, I still have the issue that you show, but the earlier issue, maybe number 7 or 8 was destroyed by my mother, along with 4 or 5 other monster film mags after I had bad nightmares after seeing The Pharaoh’s Curse film, but that’s another story.
Plenty of Zacherley to see on YouTube. Definitely a crazy guy.
