Happy Birthday, Barbara Steele.

Barbara Steele
(Born December 29, 1937)

At 10 years old, Roger Corman’s Pit And The Pendulum (1961) just blew me away. With its innovative use of color and ‘Scope (shot by Floyd Crosby), it’s one of the first times I remember getting as wrapped up in a movie’s technique as I was in the story.

It was also the first time I encountered Barbara Steele, who somehow managed to be both lovely and creepy in the same shot. Miss Steele seems to gave been born to appear in Gothic horror films, and she’s in some of the best — Pit And The Pendulum, Black Sunday (1960), Castle Of Blood (1964), etc.

Here’s wishing her a happy 86th birthday.

Always wondered what happened to the portrait Vincent Price “paints” of her in Pit And The Pendulum. (“She was that substance of loveliness… I tried to capture it, but it was the way she walked and moved – her smile, her voice.”) Wouldn’t you love to have that above your mantel?

The Olive Films, The Non-Westerns Checklist.

A few days ago, over on 50 Westerns From The 50s, I posted a list of the Westerns released on DVD and Blu-Rays by Olive Films. Turns out a number of us are looking to fill some gaps in our collections — before they’re either gone or going for crazy collectors’ prices. And now, here’s a list of some of their other titles. This is by no means everything — just the stuff that falls within the scope of this blog.

Some of these titles have already been re-issued (or are on the way) by other companies. But some may never see the light of day again, given the current state of physical media. From a couple of Republic serials to a handful of Regalscope pictures, there are some real jewels here.

As very special thanks (again) to Laura from Laura’s Miscellaneous Musings, who was a HUGE help with bringing this together.

Take a glance at this list. Olive Films put some terrific movies in our hot little hands. It’s a shame they didn’t make it. This proves the point that’s been made over and over on this blog — if we don’t support the companies that put these things out, they won’t be putting them out anymore. Okay, now I’ll climb down from my soapbox and put The Return Of Dracula back on.

Blu-Ray News #350: The Horrible Dr. Hichcock (1962).

Directed by Riccardo Freda
Starring Barbara Steele, Robert Flemyng

Riccardo Freda’s The Horrible Dr. Hichcock (1962) — that’s the version I first saw, so that’s what I’ve always called it (the repeated H thing is kinda nice) — is one of the creepiest movies I’ve ever seen. It was also the first of Barbara Steele’s Italian movies I came across. It had a big impact on me as a kid and hasn’t let up.

But there are THREE different version of the Dr. Hichcock story, each a different cut with a different title:
Raptus: The Secret Of Dr. Hichcock – the original Italian version
The Horrible Dr. Hichcock – the 76-minute cut that played the States
The Terror of Dr. Hichcock  – the 87-minute export version

Radiance Films has announced a Blu-Ray set for October that will pull together all three (with an English dub of the Italian version) and a huge batch of extras. All that and new 2K restorations, too. Recommended!

Blu-Ray News #226: Piranha (1978).

Directed by Joe Dante
Starring Bradford Dillman, Heather Menzies, Kevin McCarthy, Keenan Wynn, Barbara Steele, Dick Miller, Belinda Balaski, Paul Bartel, Richard Deacon, Bruce Gordon, Stephen The Swimming Swine

I’m so happy to be putting this post together. Because yet another movie that I love dearly, Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978), is getting a real Cadillac of a Blu-Ray release from Scream Factory this June.

One of the prop piranhas.

It’s often called “the best of the Jaws ripoffs.” But it’s more than that. It’s scary. It’s funny. It parades a terrific cast of veteran character actors across the screen. And it just plain entertains. Released the same summer as Jaws 2 (1978), it’s the better picture by far. After all, what could possibly beat a plot like this — scads of piranhas are released into a river, and at the end of the river lies a kids’ summer camp. Pure genius.

Year ago, I was outbid on a 16mm print of this movie that turned up on eBay. This extras-packed Blu-Ray will certainly help right that wrong. Here’s what you’ll get —
4K Remaster from the original camera negative
New Audio Commentary with Roger Corman
Audio Commentary with  Joe Dante & producer Jon Davison
“The Making Of Piranha” – Interviews with Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Dick Miller, Belinda Balaski & more
Behind-The-Scenes Footage, Bloopers & Outtakes, Additional Scenes from the TV version
Stills, Trailers, TV Spots, Radio Spots

All that, and it comes in one of those fancy steelbook packages. I can’t wait sink my teeth into this. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Screening: Piranha (1978) On Shout TV.

Directed by Joe Dante
Starring Bradford Dillman, Heather Menzies, Kevin McCarthy, Keenan Wynn, Barbara Steele, Dick Miller

I love Piranha (1978), Joe Dante’s Jaws ripoff — produced by Roger Corman and written by John Sayles. I’ve seen it countless times.

Shout TV has a special event planned to celebrate the movie’s 40th anniversary — August 3 on Shout TV’s Twitch channel. To me, this is certainly a movie worth celebrating.

One of the prop piranhas by Phil Tippett. How cool is that?

Piranha‘s a real favorite, and I’d love to be there. This was one I never caught in the theater.

The Hudson Horror Show’s entire lineup is in 35mm. God bless ’em!

Blu-Ray News #88: The She Beast (1966).

she-beast-lc

Directed by Michael Reeves
Starring Barbara Steele, John Karlsen, Ian Ogilvy, Mel Welles

Michael Reeves died at 25 with only three movies to his credit. The last of those is the excellent Witchfinder General (1968, known as The Conqueror Worm in the States). The first was an Italian-British co-production, La Sorella Di Satana (1966) — also known by a number of titles like Revenge Of The Blood Beast, The She Beast and Il Lago Di Satana.

The whole picture was shot in 21 days. Horror icon Barbara Steele was hired for a single day — which turned out to be 18 grueling hours of work. Raro Video US will bring The She Beast to DVD and Blu-Ray in January.
